Dante Mines Jr. had walked onto Manheim Auto Auction around 11:30 p.m. on auction Drive where he got into a Toyota and began driving, the county sheriff's office said. He switched to a blue Ford F-150 and began driving as a deputy arrived.

When Mines noticed the deputy activating his emergency equipment, he jumped out of the truck without putting it in park, as it rolled forward hitting two unoccupied cars.

Another arriving deputy spotted Mines trying to hide in a semi-truck before fleeing again on foot, this time heading towards the tree line, police said. Deputies found him bedded down in the thick underbrush outside of a barbed wire fence.

Mines was clearly ready to surrender at this point, and began to beg to be handcuffed, the sheriff's office said.

"His compliance became commendable as he scaled the fence to submit to the arrest," reads a news release. "Unfortunately, his jean shorts got caught on the barbed wire and deputies had to extricate him."

Deputies would come to find that the clearly-intoxicated. Mines had been wanted out of Caroline County for two capias offenses, one of which being a felony. Mines said if he was going to get caught he was going to make deputies “work for it.” A challenge Stafford residents know deputies don’t shy away from.

Mines was charged with two counts of attempted grand larceny, two counts of obstruction of justice, driving under the influence, hit and run, trespassing, and eluding police. He was also served on his two outstanding warrants and held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
